Now that im settled in at work, and life seems to have balanced out.. ive got big plans for myself. big plans.. ok, sooooo, maybe not BIG plans, but plans never the less.. I mean youve got to start somewhere. right..

Creativity

I was raised in a family where "making" was a part of our everyday. Maybe what i should say is that i come from creative people. My mother is a miller, and well, the millers are a crafty family. If you get 2 of us together we will make something. Sometimes its through cooking. Sometimes its the over whelming task of cloth napkins. But with out fail, some project is started. As a child i spent alot of time at my grandparents. Not only were they wonderful examples of creative minds, but they were completely supportive and naturing of a granddaughter who often wanted to make something. My grandmother was self taught upholsterer and my grandfather was, what i later learned was a master wood worker. I can remember being about 6 and with my pops help, on a stool using the band saw. If i wanted to cut out shapes and make my own blocks or paint a whole canvas purple, they were right there with the materials, support, and encouragement a creative mind needed.

Fast forward 12 years and imagine this creative mind, (or mess of a 18 year old) walking in to the furniture design studio at scad. I understand what people mean when they say doing something is like " coming home". It was people just like me, professors who understood you, not only as a creative mind, but as a lost college student. It was perfect. The building, the professors, the medium, and most importantly the people. At college i met, well, my soul mates. My love you no matter what, kick your ass when your wrong, tell you the truth, soul mates.

Through all of my education, and growing ive learned alot about my self. The formost being i am a pack animal, when it comes to my making envoriment. I need to be with people who speak my language. People who understand what i want to say, even if i dont and people who have my best interest at heart. I need that. I cant make by my self. It doesnt mean anything. I have no desire to work alone, to be in isloation and alone with my ideas. I am, first and foremost, a designer. That means i sketch and talk and think outloud. I need someone there to not only hear me, but communicate with. With out that communication i just spin in place. Some professors have tried to convince me that creativity is a life of solitude. But im not buying it.

Since college my soul mates have spread all over and ive been blessed to find a couple more. I originally began this blog as a way to reach out with my thoughts. Some how, ive managed to isolate my self and lose this form of communication. Along with that ive stopped making. And well, that just isnt me. Over the holidays i over heard someone say that they "just needed to get jessica back into her art.". I cant put words on how horrible that felt. It was the recognition that someone else recognized how lost i was. It was also the realization that soul mates surprise you. Thank you for the motivation and support. And welcome back...

I am: a maker, a designer, an enamelist, a metalsmith, a welder, a SCAD graduate, a granddaughter, a red head, a miller, a friend, from savannah, loyal, passionate, determined, creative, funny, a smart ass, homesick

i make: objects, vessels, photographs, things i cant lift, dirty laundry, noise, messes, cakes and cookies, furniture, drawings, coffee, presentations, damn good roasted potatoes, beautiful 'beads', love

i believe in: what goes around comes around, treating others like you would like to be treated, staying true to yourself, trusting my gut, faith, promises, love, hope, working hard and loving it, that bacon makes everything better, sunday dinners, simplicity, instinct, aesthetics, that one day i will wake up a 400 lbs sicilian woman

today begins my candidacy extravaganza. (i'm calling it that because it will be 3 days of printing, followed with 3 days of writing, followed by an intensive install in a less that prepared gallery.)

i'm printing 9 (or 12) of my shadow images. and to do so i am in Towson MD, with master printer Michael Smoot. im super excited. super super freaking excited.

candidacy chatter

*THIS ISNT' GOING TO MAKE MUCH SENCE TO ANYONE, SO FEEL FREE TO SKIP THIS POST.*

ive been thinking about candidacy and what i want to present and how its all connected (the prints to the object)s. if i display all the objects, the first objective question i ask my self was where are the rest of the prints.? why only 12 prints but 60+ objects. what do the other objects do. and the second was how does the objects and 'evolution' tie into the prints. i spent sunday 'curating the objects into rows and allowing them to take over the wall. taking over the wall resulted in them function as a whole, and semi successfully, but i couldn't wrap my head around why. curating them into rows allowed them to function like elements, (similar to the periodical table of elements) (and because they were on the wall read very specimen like), but i could see a connection between them and the prints. i kept asking why then i removed the 50+ objects that didn't have prints and found that the 10-12 objects on one wall with their printed shadows on the other wall made the most sense. on the front wall you will see the objects 'mimicking' drawing and on the other wall you see drawing/prints of them existing with their shadows, to create a print of a 'volumetric' form. (im not sure if i can call it a volumetric form if it's on paper, but the images have volume.) i feel like i understand this idea of objects on one wall and shadow on the other. also i have enough wall that i'm going to display at least 9 prints in one row. what ever i can comfortable fit on the 'print wall' is what i will show and they will be presented with there corresponding objects on the other. *as a side note, my shadow wall is 18 feet and the usable space on my object wall in 9. so the shadow's will talk up 2x the space as the objects. (similar to how our shadows are always longer than us* than pleased me. i'm considering magnetizing the objects directly to the wall VS. placing them on a slight riser, (something about 8" x 8" X 1/2" just to give them a 'platform' more of a presence.) so that's where i am.

One of my favorite grad students, once told me that 'you aren’t someone (as a respected maker) until someone copies you,' and that 'copying is the sincerest form of flattery.' I feel it's my duty as a designer/maker/craftsman to try and maintain originality.

I’m tired of this 'you can’t reinvent the wheel' theory. Why not? Are you telling me in 100 years work will be just like now? Because I believe it won’t be. In 20 years we will have technology at our disposal that we don’t have now, because the sciences don’t believe in stopping. They continue to push and develop this ‘wheel’, and we as artists continue to find ways to appropriate it.

Plus, what is the point of making your version of someone else’s idea?

My question is what do you do as a maker when another copies your ‘originality’? What do you do if you find that someone is mimicking your work? What is the difference between mimicking and directly copying?

What is the appropriate way to handle that situation? Do you send the mimicker a little note acknowledging the direct reference? Do you say nothing? Do you take this as flattery, accepting that not everyone is creative and some people need to steal from others to have any ideas at all?

As makers, how do we handle that?

in my seminar class we have this list of questions we have to answer each week. question like "what do i judge as success?", "why should i look at something disturbing?", and what contributes to a successful studio practice?". One question we had to answer had something to do with instinct, and trusting ours.

i mention this because in working on the body of work for candidacy, i keep stumbling upon things. things more interesting that i could have planned. it's that happening. that small bit of fate, or happenstance that inspires me the most. its allowing the material and obvious details to influence the work its self. its what elizabeth gilbert referenced as the idea of having a "genius" that helps me make the work i make.*

*please understand im not saying i am a genius, or have anything genius about me. watch the TED talk, you'll understand. im saying that i firmly believe that my best work comes from the collaboration between my ideas and my instinct (in this case ill calling that instinct a "genius" even though i think above average works better)

ANYWAYS, this are images of my current work. im still not sure how to describe them, but im posting them anyways.

ive waited all semester for VCU's visiting artist Tom Loeser's presentation.

"Tom Loeser has been head of the wood/furniture area at the University of Wisconsin-Madison since 1991. He designs and builds one-of-a-kind functional objects that are often carved and painted and always based on the history of design and furniture-making as a starting point for developing new form and meaning. His artwork has been included in over 200 national and international exhibitions since 1981. He is represented in the collections of several museums and universities including the Museums of Fine Arts in Boston and Houston, The Renwick Gallery, The Cooper Hewitt Museum, The Yale University Art Gallery, The Milwaukee Museum of Art and the Brooklyn Museum. He has received four Visual Artist Fellowship Grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. In 1993 he spent 6 months in Japan on an NEA Creative Artist Exchange Fellowship."

...but i've also been waiting all semester for the chance to teach something in the enameling class and as my fate would have it... both happen at the same time. sometimes it feels like the 'grad school gods' hate me... so even if i cant go. i really recommend anyone in richmond attend. Mr. Loeser is one of the greatest contemporary furniture designers of my time. His work remains fresh and intriguing, current and inventive. it's sure to be a fantastic presentation.

"Ice & Snow Furniture Raised From Lake Mendota"

Sustainable Artist/Designer Hongtao Zhou, UW-Madison

Feb, 2009

Hongtao Zhou, a University of Wisconsin-Madison art student, is creating the icy furniture on frozen Lake Mendota near the UW-Madison Memorial Union Terrace shoreline. Visitors stops by taking pictures, eating ice cream with snow bowls and trying the cold ice chairs. The icy furniture makes the winter Terrace shoreline a place to enjoy winter fun.

The furniture is raised by an artist following the nature using local climate and natural resources to please people in winter. They connect the lake, the land, the air and the people and complete a sustainable life cycle with minimum environmental impact. Environmental artist wants climate furniture to raise up awareness that we can make a sustainable world with less or without negative impact.

Following the weather changes, the furniture will back into the lake and become a part of the water body again and complete their beautiful green life cycle.*

i've always had a profound love of books. im not one of those people who can check them out at the library. i think if i'll read it: i'd like it enough to own it. so i buy them. alot of them. ive had some small electroformed objects ive been dreaming about enameling and making into a necklace. so today i took it upon myself to burn out the interior 'matter'. and proceed ahead w/ the making. right, sounds painless. its jewlery and i WAS excited....

im jessica schlachter, a MFA grad student @ virginia commonwealth university in the craft/materials studies department in the school of the art. my work is based around the vessel, line, form and surface. i dislike capital letters. i consider my self a coffee connoisseur (well maybe not that knowledgeable, but working on it.) i love to cook. i just bought my first house. i have a BFA in furniture design and will always have the desire to be a 'wood worker'.

california review II

my trip to CA went something like ::

*friends in airports makes 8 hours on a plane not so horrible, thanks ariel...

*"June Schwarcz patented raku technique" equals success on a 'cradle to cradle' form. (picture to come as soon as UPS delivers my package)

*spending time with june is always so educational, not only about enamel but also about my self. we share beliefs and philosophy's about making and the enjoyment of art. i make because i find things that have stories that i'd like to share with others. objects that are beautiful inspire me to create memories and i choose to capture those memories through metal. so the conversations about metals, and technique and color and paintings and how 'anythings can be a vessel' inspire me to stop thinking and just make.

*i love to electroform. not necessarily raw objects, but the electroforming of substrates. i love the stability it adds to forms that would otherwise not exhist.

*more of that amazing patination.

this trip also included a visit to the de Young. the de Young has a strong connections to 'crafts'. which results in the display and presentation of craft pieces being included in every exhibition. they currently are in the process of acquisioning 16 pieces by june. this will be the largest public collection of her work.

while at the de Young i was excited to see two current shows.

the Asian / American / Modern Art show was amazing. "Asian | American | Modern Art: Shifting Currents, 1900-1970 presents the work of artists of Asian ancestry who lived and worked in the United States. This exhibition represents the first comprehensive survey of these artists, and seeks to advance awareness of this under-represented group in American art history. Their art reflects the currents of identity and style that shift between aesthetics of diverse international geographies. This exhibition is rich in variety and demonstrates the wealth of Asian American art using masterpieces spanning seventy years the diversification of work and connections with contemporary artists."

it also connected with the current exhibition/instillation of Maya Lin, who spoke at my SCAD graduation about her experiences and how she was chosen for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

i also saw the exhibition of Al Farrow. June had introduced me to Al's work on my last visit. so when scheduling this visit i knew i wanted to see the exhibition at the de Young. Farrow's work are inspirational and breath taking. the attention to detail, and thought applied to each piece is amazing. I hands down recommend anyone in CA do your best to see this show or check out Al Farrow's work on his website.

and if those shows were enough to make my head explode, we also checked out SF MOMA. Where they had the Martin Puryear exhibition.

Puryear's work and attention to detail in these magnificent pieces inspired me over and over again. and with june discussing how 'anything can be a vessel'. i left full of ideas and wanting to get back to the studio.

and now that thats over im leaving for california. tomorrow. im going back to spend another week with june schwarcz. and am really looking forward to it. i find my self so filled with inspiration and confidence, i thought that might be the best way to kick off another semester. ill post pictures once i return. ive got big plans for making while im gone. wish me luck.

back from my whirl-win trip of the east coast and having almost recovered from the amount of doing and lack of sleep i'd like to post things i've learned

1. i am my most successful when i'm playing with material. the work is much more interesting when i experiment and play.

2. i create / design these objects completely opposite of the way i design funrniture. with furniture i design, draw, develop, design, draw, develop, work in model form, develop, plan and finally produce. in metals i play. i don't really ponder over decisions, i just cut, fold, seam, fold, finish. now i understand

3. i make aesthetic art. yep. aesthetic, process based art. it's about play and producing. it's about experimenting and learning.

4. i am a modernist. (that seems the funniest to me). i hate to title ones self but, i'm a mid century girl. i had no idea how far those ideas ran. it turns out i'm a total and complete modernist. the architecture, the schooling, the designs, and painters, the concepts. i believe in it all.

5. i have a huge tool box.

6. i am inspired by experiences, line, form, color, and profile. and that is fine..

7. i love tea made from loose tea leaves.

8. being kind to people can really make a difference.

9. heaven is fresh strawberries, dipped in sour cream, dipped in brown sugar.

i'm in california. technically i'm in la. next door to the ucla campus.

tonight im going to meet with the board from the enamel arts foundation. they purchased two of my pieces a couple of months ago and i'm really interested in seeing the rest of the collection. i'm also working on researching how industrial enamel was introduced to the artist. and if any one knows enameling history is Bernard Jazzar and Hal nelson, authors of Painting with Fire.

and if that wasn't exciting enough (i know i'm such a geek) monday i'll be staying with June Schwarcz. June is an enamelist superstar. she is my hero, her work is a total inspiration and her philosophy on her art refreshes me. so monday through friday i'll be her house guest. enameling and plating with a master. i'm so excited.

so that what i'm doing, and why i'm here. i'm going to learn a ton and hope my head doesn't explode from the experiences.

with the opening/closing of our first year show title 'leap' i now have time to consider my landing. what the hell do i do next? what now? the guidelines for the show were easy, make a new piece, exhibit in group show. oh yeah, you've got 4 weeks. so, initially that didn't seem so stressful, but then the words 'stop what you were doing before, that ends now, try something different' (please be aware that isn't a direct quote, for it to be a direct quote i would have to remember the exact words and since i was filled with fear at the time the direct words are escaping me so lets just say it went something like that.

and my response

now. the show is up. i feel i produced work unlike what i was doing before, yet still maintains several qualities from my list of 10 (thanks Natalya). being the work 1) looks like me, but also 2) appears fresh , 3) challenged me and i hope 4) invites the viewer to consider whatever the viewer wants to consider.

i guess this is where i should include a brief statement about what we're talking about.

I produce process based objects. Process based because i have chosen to use processes that directly affect my ideas and physically leave a response. I oxy-acetylene weld copper, and torch fire enamel. this are the processes i choose as my vocabulary for conveying my ideas that become these objects. both of these processes directly place there fingerprint on my idea. and that fingerprint i leave, completely in the open for everyone to view. my hope is you find it intriguing, interesting, explanatory, or maybe it just cause you to wonder. either way i'll take it.

so that brings us up to date. i have these forms and don't know what to do next.

i'm interested in exploring this idea more but i've not had enough time to let my ideas marinate, for me to really understand the work. i feel like i just explained what i understand about these pieces, but i am continuously told to develop more. i am excited about the idea of playing right now, of using this time to work out ideas, to work through things i'm thinking of. i've always been to taught that things have to be in a series, however i don't feel that fits now. is it okay to just make these two and move on?

and if so...

previously i've made vessels, vessels because they had an opening and the physicality to hold something. but never with the intention of them holding anything. and considering that statement leads me to ' why make a vessel?', what if i made forms without openings, so they became strictly hollow forms, which would make them sculpture. i'm sure you can say that's what i make now but since i'm unsure of how i feel about my previous work i ask myself why make anything at all. i mean why physically create something with an opening or create something with out.

and i ended up here...............

if the work is about the technical process and the physical result of making using techniques that leave its fingerprint on the actual work (and that sentence leaves me just as confused as you) then what if i documented the process. what if i created these forms, or the template for the forms (i.e. a sheet of copper, welded, constructed so that is had all the potential to be a form, but wasn't physically formed (@ this point my sheet of copper is almost flat and covered with that fingerprint i keep talking about) and i embossed in onto paper, leaving the fingerprint of the work and the fingerprint of the process, but no object?

a little artsier that i tend to get but i'm considering.

hi. hello. so it turns out once i stop witting i have the hardest time beginning again. so i apologize for my lack of updating.

since i fell off the map i:

got the best summer internship @ Ferro Corporation in Cleveland Ohio. Ferro is the leading global supplier of technology-based performance materials for manufacturers. Ferro materials enhance the performance of products in a variety of end market applications, including electronics, solar energy, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, building and renovation, appliances, automotive, household furnishings, and industrial products. I worked in the porcelain enamel frit division. this allowed me to learn a lot of the how and why about my favorite enamel. it also allowed me to play and create some really great new pieces.

aside from working in a place where i had to wear a hard hat, and steel toe shoes (that novelty never wore off) i was able to met some really great people and be surrounded by amazing historical works of art. an example is Edward Winters (1908-1976) the forefather of enamel on steel.. i was surrounded by these amazing historical pieces.

I also finally go myself together and sold two of my vessels. Which was fantastic to have them with people who will appreciate them as much as i do.

I graduated from Kent State with my MA. i don't have much more to say about that.

oh year, and i got accepted in Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond Virginia. for the MFA metals/jewelry program. Which starts today. i'm very excited about that.

speaking of starting today. i have to get to class. can't be late on my first day.

I’ve been looking at my blog considering the amount of things I’ve needed to post and found the task a little overwhelming. But rather than putting it off any more I’ve decided to compile a list.

1:: my husband got the "best" idea that we drive to Punxsutawney Pennsylvania to watch puxnatawany phil pop out of a hole and declare the weather. So.... 30 consecutive hours of being awake, 12 men from the 'inner circle', one groundhog (which after 5 hours in the cold I found extreme pleasure in calling a weasel), one mountain road to the middle of the twilight zone, a school bus ride, and my own rendition of the song 'me and Mrs. Jones', oh and the mile trek down hill in -degree weather through a cornfield, I’m glad we went, happy to say I’ve seen it, but... next year i think i'll tivo it and watch it @ home.

2:: Sean and I took a road trip to the Andy Warhol museum, where I became enamored with the work of Ron Mueck. The Warhol introduces him as:

"The exhibition, Ron Mueck at The Andy Warhol Museum features seven of the artist’s realistic human sculptures including: In Bed (2005) a giant sculpture of a woman lying in bed; A Girl (2006), a vast sculpture of a newborn baby; Wild Man (2005), a nine-foot sculpture of a naked, bearded man; Spooning Couple (2005), a miniature sculpture of a couple lying together on a bed; Man in a Boat (2002) a naked man sitting in a life-size wooden rowing boat; Ron Mueck’s self-portrait, Mask II (2001-2002); and Mask III (2005), a large portrait of a black woman.

Mueck was born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1958, to parents of German descent. He often made toys as a child and this hobby became his profession. He began his career in Australia as a puppet-maker, creating marionettes for children’s television. In 1986 he moved to the USA and worked in the film industry before moving to London where he set up his own model-making business. Mueck’s fine art career began in 1996 when Paula Rego asked him to make a sculpture of Pinocchio as a model for a series of Disney-inspired paintings she was making for the exhibition Spellbound: Art and Film at the Hayward Gallery in London. The sculpture was exhibited alongside Rego’s paintings and it caught the attention of Charles Saatchi who commissioned Mueck to make a group of works for his collection. One of these sculptures Dead Dad became the surprise star of the now-legendary Sensation!: Young British Artists from the Saatchi Collection exhibition at the Royal Academy."

The detail left me speechless. I kept waiting for 'wild man' to jump up and run past me. The realistic quality of these will blow your mind. it's so hard to really understand the scale or really see the details by looking at still images. check out the video. I completely recommend if you are within a 5-hour drive of Pittsburg PA you make the trek and visit the museum. These are so worth it.

3:: so anyone who really knows me knows I love meat. I actually refer to my self as a meat-aterian. so imagine my pleasure when I found out one of my dearest people in the whole world, becca rice, has began the blog charcuterista. A blog about meat, I mean can it get any better? Was my initial thought, but once I looked closer I found that she isn't just writing about pleasures of the palette, but also doing it in a manner that might be the most poetic, beautiful thing I’ve read in quite some time.

4:: @ Kent our professor is on sabbatical, and her replacement is jessica calderwood. She is great, a breath of fresh air, and I’m really enjoying the information and knowledge she is sharing with the studio.

charles and ray eames. for those of you that are unaware (and on this fact i'll let it slip, but seriously, step it up) the eames are one of the design icons of our times. everything from educational video, furniture, to military splints. well they wil be commemorated with 16 stamps published by the United States Postal Service. Designs include the LCW, the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman and the House of Cards.

the stamps are to be released in the summer of 2008. i've never been so excited about going to the post office.

tomorrow i begin to install in the gallery. they've been nice enough to let me spend a week installing. so tomorrow i'll begin setting up, moving things over and figuring the space out. with only one vessel fitting in the car at a time, it's going to take a handful of trips. this also gives me the chance to get photographs.

i have a handful of blogs i enjoy reading regularly. one of which is laura crow miller. she has a wonderful eye for photography and makes the best paper stationary and the such. lots of little details and the like. today she posted a blog about a friend of hers that is interested in doing a collaborative cookbook, that sounds like a cookbook and photograph combination. i am so excited.

that's my favorite thing about blogs, they allow you to form relationships with people you normally wouldn't get to know.

well as you can tell, i emailed her. the 'her' being the friend of the woman who writes the blog that i enjoy reading.

well back to my excitement, i'm thinking that great chicken and balsamic vinegar dish, my peach cobbler, and those roasted pecans. this just might be the break i need from this thesis and grad school thing.

normally i can hold it together around the end of the semester. i pride my self on being able to handle the stress at the end. but since the end of the semester is over, and since my thesis show opens in about 3 weeks ( i don't want to do the math and come up with a number of days.), and since i didn't get a christmas break, and i haven't seen my family in a while.

i really feel like i'm starting to feel the pressure. i mean i'm in good shape with the work, i think. but it's the lack of support and advisement that has me freaking out. i've done all of this by my self and if it isn't what she ( we'll refer to the proverbial she, ever though we all know which she has me worked up). i'll have two of the pieces finished by the end of this week. and i feel like that will take off a good amount of pressure, but wow until i get these done, ahhhhhh!

...three layer cake
a while back i came across the site three layer cake and was instantly interested. it discusses 2 of my favorite things. food & design. so very perfect for me. i was hooked. i've been keeping up with the postings and have made the decision that i think they have great character. the images are breathtaking and the interviews are really modern, wonderfully interesting and relevant.

yesterday i began torch firing my first enameled vessel.......................and it went perfectly. by perfect i mean three torches, noise like a jet engine and the most amazing breathtaking color palette i've ever seen. i am so pleased, and just over the moon with excitement.

on a separate note i've come to the decision that i wouldn't place any pictures of my thesis work until after the show, in honor of 'the big presentation', and all the anticipation that 7'5" vessels create... but i just can't help it. i'm so excited and anyone who knows me knows i just can't keep exciting things to myself. so i've chosen some details that i don't think spoil the presentation.

today i applied the first layer of the liquid white enamel to the first of my two enameled vessels. i an excited. all semester i've been constructing and creating and this is the first of what will only be a month of finishing, literally. so even though i haven't actually fired anything yet i am so very excited. spraying on the enamel really reminded my of how much i love it. i'm so excited about the firings.

phenomenology...

Phenomenology has at least three main meanings in philosophical history: one in the writings of G.W.F. Hegel, another in the writings of Edmund Husserl in 1920, and a third, deriving from Husserl's work, in the writings of his former research assistant Martin Heidegger in 1927:

For G.W.F. Hegel, phenomenology is an approach to philosophy that begins with an exploration of phenomena (what presents itself to us in conscious experience) as a means to finally grasp the absolute, logical, ontological and metaphysical Spirit that is behind phenomena. This has been called a "dialectical phenomenology".

For Edmund Husserl, phenomenology is "the reflective study of the essence of consciousness as experienced from the first-person point of view"[1] Phenomenology takes the intuitive experience of phenomena (what presents itself to us in phenomenological reflexion) as its starting point and tries to extract from it the essential features of experiences and the essence of what we experience. When generalized to the essential features of any possible experience, this has been called "transcendental phenomenology". Husserl's view was based on aspects of the work of Franz Brentano and was developed further by philosophers such as Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Max Scheler, Edith Stein, Dietrich von Hildebrand and Emmanuel Levinas.

Martin Heidegger believed that Husserl's approach overlooked basic structural features of both the subject and object of experience (what he called their "being"), and expanded phenomenological enquiry to encompass our understanding and experience of Being itself, thus making phenomenology the method (in the first phase of his career at least) of the study of being: ontology.

The difference in approach between Husserl and Heidegger influenced the development of existential phenomenology and existentialism in France, as is seen in the work of Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir. Munich phenomenologists (Johannes Daubert, Adolf Reinach, Alexander Pfänder in Germany and Alfred Schütz in Austria), and Paul Ricoeur have all been influenced. Readings of Husserl and Heidegger have also been crucial aspects of the philosophies of Jacques Derrida and Bernard Stiegler.

this semester in graduate seminar we are giving presentations about artists who's work is in the same "......" as ours. i've been very excited about my presentation all along. the idea seems inspiring, along with appropriate with the idea of my 'thesis' looming above. we were also suppose to be given presentations about historical times in metals, almost like a 'history of metals' class. but that hasn't happened. so here i am calling and asking if anyone has any suggestions this would be a great time. they don't have to be metals people only. i really feel like my work is obviously metals, but just as inspired as my history and my interest in other mediums.

briefly i would describe my work as :

-based around the idea of construction techniques being exposed and obvious. used as design elements
-treating the surface of the object as more than a surface treatment. allowing the surface to become of equal importance

i've done it. i gave into 'production jewelry'. at school we have a jewelry co-op and they always do a christmas sale. call it peer pressure, or my sudden love for fused (welded) silver wire, whatever the reason.... i gave in. i did it. i produced jewelry.

....and did fairly well. meaning i sold most of what i produced. that gives me a great feeling of satisfaction, but at the same time i can't help but feel like i whored my self to the masses.

.... my moleskine. i love my notebook. the one i am infatuated with right now is my 'moleskine large ruled journal' i used as my notebook from my late modern 1940-present class. i love it's ribbon bookmark, i love it's pocket in the back. i am crazy about that elastic band that allows me to keep my overstuffed notebook closed. really i feel that it is one of the most well designed things i have found.

i recommend anyone that draws, journals, sketched, or keeps anything in a notebook get a moleskine.

in my opinion, this is good design.

TOMS shoes was announced as the cooper-hewitt national design center's People's Design Award. it's a great company founded by Blake Mycoskie who began the shoe company based around the traditional 'alpargatas' shoe. the company matches every shoe purchased and donates a pair to a child in need. they have this philosophy of

"you buy a pair of TOMS and i give a pair to a child on your behalf." Blake Mycoskie

how great is that.

This body of work is based around the Fibonacci ratio and the idea of formulaic thought vs. intuitive thought. This body is composed of four vessels each with the intended height of 89”. These vessels are created from copper bands that I form, then weld and braze together. The application in which they are welded results in a cone form that I then dependant on the piece either powder coat or torch fire with a liquid white enamel.

Two of these pieces will be structures and regimented, resulting in the two that are meant to represent “formulaic thought”. These two will be powder coated white. This process will result in very structured, precise pieces.

The other two will be welded together the same way but I will do more cutting to the bands creating a more tapered cone with a slight curve to them. These pieces will be torch-fired enamel. With the torch fired enamel surface you get very little control over the color and a huge variety in colors that can appear. This is the concept for the intuitive pieces.

these are images taken by charles eames of a plywood molded airplane wing. i have always found the simplicity of these images inspriational. i also find something so wonderful about the idea of this detail, and the inspiration a detail can bring.

i'll also be honest and say i've always wanted to have these images blown up life size and surround myself in a room with them. (it's possible this has some weight on my thesis).

reciently i came across the work of sarah kate burgess. i love her "do it yourself" rings'. i find something so exciting about the idea of designing something that you share with the masses, not at an insane price, but on the basis that you want them ( the masses) to enjoy the product.

so, i'm normally the last person to tell anyone there is anything worth watching on 'youtube', but after watching this documentary this morning i just had to check.

i think is't a combination of the music and the visual, but this is the best thing i've seen in i don't know how long.
